Check whether the zeros still exist
Open the original CSV in a text editor before saving it in a spreadsheet. If it still contains 00123, the zeros can be preserved. If the source already contains 123, this tool cannot reconstruct the missing digits or guess the correct identifier length.
Adding CSV quotes alone does not set a spreadsheet column's type. A spreadsheet can interpret "00123" as a number when opening the file.
1. Try a small identifier file
Download the identifier practice CSV. These are fictional identifiers and ZIP-code examples, with two data rows:
ID,ZIP
00123,02108
00007,00501Open CSV Fixer above, select Browse files, and choose identifiers.csv. Keep Block unsafe formulas enabled.
2. Choose the output for your destination
For Excel text expressions
Keep Preserve leading zeros enabled. Review the fixed preview: 00123 becomes ="00123". Select Export fixed CSV. In a text editor, the first exported data row is:
"=""00123""","=""02108"""The repeated quotes escape a CSV field. Excel can evaluate the resulting text expression to display the zeros. This output contains formulas, so use the plain-text option below when formulas are unsuitable or your destination rejects them.
For a database or a text-column import
Turn off Preserve leading zeros and export again. The first data row stays:
00123,02108Configure the receiving fields as text. In Excel, use its text/CSV import workflow and set both ID and ZIP columns to Text before loading. Simply opening and resaving a CSV can discard the zeros again.
3. Verify the saved copy
Both downloads are named identifiers-fixed.csv; your browser may add a suffix to the second file. Check the contents rather than relying on the filename. Both outputs use UTF-8 with a byte-order mark, comma separators, a header row, and two data rows. The source file remains unchanged.
Compare 00123, 00007, 02108, and 00501 in the destination before importing the full dataset. The tool handles one CSV at a time, up to 25 MB and 100,000 data rows. It does not read XLSX files.
